What are the classifications of car tires

Jul 24,2025

Automobile tires can be mainly classified according to five dimensions: purpose, structure, pattern, size, and pressure bearing method, including more than ten sub types such as sedan tires, radial tires, and off-road tread tires.

Function

Car tires (PC): designed specifically for cars, emphasizing comfort, low noise, and high-speed stability, often using radial structures.

Light duty tires (LT): used for pickup trucks or light trucks, with stronger load-bearing capacity.

Load and Bus Tires (TBR): Suitable for heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and buses, with high wear resistance.

Off road tires: wide tread and deep tread, suitable for unpaved roads such as mud and sand.

Special tires: such as snow tires (with snowflake markings), mud tires, explosion-proof tires, etc., designed for specific environments.

Classified by structure

Diagonal tires: The ply layers are arranged in a cross pattern, which is wear-resistant but has poor comfort, and is commonly seen in construction vehicles.

Radial tire (R): The curtain layers are arranged vertically, which is adopted by mainstream passenger cars and combines comfort and energy efficiency.

Classified by pattern

Stripe pattern: Good dry road performance, but weak drainage.

Horizontal pattern: Strong drainage, suitable for rainy days.

Mixed pattern: Combining the characteristics of straight and horizontal patterns.

Off road pattern: Large deep groove design enhances grip on complex road surfaces.
